What is ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is an AI chatbot developed by OpenAI. In this article, I give a clear ChatGPT explanation and show you what you can do with it.
ChatGPT is designed to communicate with humans in natural language. You can use ChatGPT to:
- ask questions,
- write or translate texts,
- learn and generate new ideas,
- get help with programming,
- create recipes or plans,
- and much more.
Thanks to its versatility, ChatGPT is used worldwide by students, entrepreneurs and businesses.
Free and paid versions of ChatGPT
There are different versions of ChatGPT:
- Free version – ideal for beginners, but with speed and usage limitations.
- ChatGPT Plus – €23/month. Faster, more stable, and access to the latest models.
- ChatGPT Pro – €229/month, designed for companies and professionals with heavier needs.
👉 Since Microsoft co-owns OpenAI, ChatGPT technology is also integrated in Microsoft Copilot, built into Word, Excel and Outlook. Copilot can often answer the same questions and is a great alternative if you reach the free ChatGPT limit.
The ChatGPT start screen
It is very easy to use ChatGPT: simply type your question, upload files, or dictate text using the microphone.
When you open ChatGPT, you’ll see a simple start screen where you can:
- type your question,
- upload photos or files,
- dictate text via the microphone,
- or start a conversation with the icon showing four vertical bars.

🔒 The button at the top right allows you to start a temporary chat. This won’t be saved in your history and won’t be used to train the model. For security, OpenAI keeps these chats for up to 30 days.
Example: asking ChatGPT about the weather
When you ask ChatGPT: “What’s the weather today?” you’ll get a detailed answer. Recently, ChatGPT also started showing the sources of its information.
You can give feedback (👍 or 👎) or simply ask follow-up questions to refine the answer.
What does GPT stand for?
GPT stands for Generative Pretrained Transformer.
Many people wonder: how does ChatGPT work?
It relies on the transformer model, which links words and context.
In short, ChatGPT:
- is pretrained on massive amounts of text,
- establishes connections between words and sentences,
- and predicts the most logical “next word.”
Why is ChatGPT so powerful?
- It keeps context throughout a conversation.
- It can reason and infer (for example: if you say you’re allergic to eggs, ChatGPT avoids them in recipes).
- It is continuously improved through updates and anonymous usage data.
Useful features of ChatGPT
- Shortcut: Ctrl + Shift + O instantly opens a new chat.
- History: all your past chats are stored in the sidebar.
- Settings: adjust ChatGPT to your preferences via your profile.

Practical example: saving a recipe
Say you ask: “Give me a recipe for spaghetti for 6 people.”
To save the answer:
- Click the copy icon.
- Open a new Word or Google Docs file.
- Paste the text and save it under the name you want.
This way, you can easily use ChatGPT as your personal assistant for daily tasks.
- This is just one of many ChatGPT examples that show how useful the chatbot can be in everyday life.
Conclusion
ChatGPT is much more than a chatbot: it’s a smart AI assistant that helps you write, learn, plan and work more productively.
